Rowling: Mrs Barnes and Miss White supported by Mrs Doy

Shakespeare: Miss Letts supported by Mrs Judkins

Year 6 Term 3 Update

Well done and thank you to all of our Year 6 pupils that have been so enthusiastic and have shown so much dedicated towards their work during lockdown. We fully understand how difficult it can be to learn from home and are so pleased with how much effort you have been applying.

This term, our live English lessons have been centred around the novel ‘Walk Two Moons’. The children have been given opportunities to be creative in the ways in which they present their work, including: newspaper reports, prayers, holiday brochures and storyboards. Daily ‘end of the day reading sessions’ have been uploaded for the children to watch/ listen to in continuation of the chapter read during the lesson. During the final week of term, the children are going to be planning, writing and editing their own narrative based on key structures from Walk Two Moons.

The novel ‘Walk Two Moons’ is a story about a girl who goes on a road trip across North America with her grandparents. To link with this, our Geography unit has been all about North and South America and the children have been on their own road trip across America, learning about how the physical and human characteristics vary from country to country.

Maths lessons have been challenging at times, but with the perseverance and guidance of the parents, coupled with the support of the teachers offering additional support videos and extra Zoom sessions – the children have made some great progress with their knowledge and skills of percentages and fractions.

It has been slightly disturbing at times to log into tapestry and be greeted with so many photos of bread covered in MOULD! This is part of the science learning whereby the children have set-up their own investigations in order to find out which conditions are best for mould to grow.

One of the most popular lessons so far has been the computing lessons. This term, we have focused on improving our coding skills by completing different coding challenges. The children have also created their own unique game using the skills that have been developed.

We have continued our Zones of Regulation lessons, focusing on identifying the different signs our bodies give us to indicate which zone we are in.

On Wednesday afternoons, the children are invited to join a Well-Being Wednesday Zoom meeting where they are given the chance to speak to their classmates in a less-formal setting and lots of exciting games are also played. These meetings have definitely helped to keep us all positive and reminded us that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you again to all of you that have helped your child/ren to continue with their learning in a structured and supportive environment.

We hope you enjoy a stress-free week and look forward to seeing you all in our Zoom English lesson after half-term.

Term 2 - Bikeability by Skye, Year 6

We had a great week in Bikeability, learning how to ride safely on the road. In the first session, we practised in the playground before being let loose on the roads. Paul and John (the instructors) taught us how to do a snake, riding behind each other so we could stay safe with such a large group of people. On the second day, we went out on the road and practised riding around parked cars. We were taught the rhyme – ‘car door and a bit more.’ On the third day, we had to ride on a T-junction, learning how to signal when turning. Everyone really enjoyed it and we all passed level two with a badge and a certificate.

July 2019- Last Day

July 2019

We were the unexpected targets of a water fight by the Foundation Stage children this afternoon. We decided to join in and soak Miss Letts in the process!

A great time was had by all!

April 2019 - Maths Revision

In the expected booster group, we made shape revision posters. We had to collect the information for our poster from the front of the class and take it back to our partner.

Finger crossed we'll keep the information in our heads!

World Book Day

We shared our favourite books with our friends and explained what makes the books so special to us.

“I prefer fiction books because of the imagination and images they allow you to create in your mind.” IS

“My favourite book is Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School. It’s a funny book and the vocabulary Jeff Kinney uses is amusing!” TCP

Term 4- English (letter writing)

We planned a formal letter from William Beech's new teacher, to his mother in London. To get our ideas flowing, we went outside and stepped through our ideas, verbally.

Term 3 WOW Day- Pack Up Your Troubles!

This term, we will be focusing on WW2 in Britain, considering how it effected the lives of people living here.

Five fabulously fun activities were planned for us; cooking a wartime recipe, WW2 singing, creating model Spitfires, designing propaganda posters and making evacuee tags.

December 2018 - Pedal Power

On Monday 17th December we held our Pedal Power event to raise money for school and Reverend Ben's chosen charity - Greenpeace. The event was held to thank Reverend Ben for his help and support in school.

As part of the sponsored event, we had to complete as many laps as we could on our bikes or scooters in 10 minutes. We enjoyed completing the challenge and riding on the school playground! It's even more fun when we're given permission to ride on the playground!

Maths of the Day

We learnt about the value of a digit in numbers with up to 3dp, by playing a game involving us running to different hoops and collecting digits.

November 2018 - Visting the Remembrance Garden

We all visited the Remembrance Garden at St Lawrence Church. It was thought provoking and incredibly moving.

Check out the pictures and more information here!

October 2018 - Restart a Heart Day

We enjoyed learning CPR on Restart a Heart Day. We learnt how to assess a casualty and how to find out if someone is breathing. We all practiced CPR and took part in a quiz to review what we had learnt.

WOW Day- September 2018

Lumos Maxima

Year 6 (2017-18)

The Black Country Museum- July 2018

Our annual whole- school trip was to The Black Country Museum in Dudley.

We all had a fantastic day out, exploring and investigating life in the Victorian era. We were surprised to see how similar our modern fun-fairs are compared to the Victorian fun-fairs. We had lots of fun playing traditional street games and visiting the cinema to watch a silent Charlie Chaplin film.

Tweet Tweet WOW Day- June 2018

During WOW day, we began creating a magnified mosaic of a Dodo. We split an enlarged drawing of the extinct creature into 24 smaller sections. Each child was given a section of the picture to focus on. They then sketched the detail needed, onto a larger sheet of paper and decorated it using oil pastels.

All of the parts were then combined to produce a stunning piece of artwork for each of our classroom walls!

Who knows why the dodo is extinct?

Active Schools Week - May 2018

During Active Schools Week, we have been planning, creating, testing and evaluating our own games to improve our fitness. We also took part in a teacher challenge - we had to beat Miss White during our Mile A Day.

Bring a Man Day - April 2018

As part of our annual 'Bring a Man to School Day' the children in Year 6 investigated creating circuits with our male visitors. The children worked through various challenges; investigating the impact of adding more power to their circuits and creating their own components.

Debating - February 2018

This term, the children have been reading 'Goodnight Mister Tom'. After collecting evidence from the text, children then debated the question; is Tom Oakley the best person to take care of William?

Children enjoyed debating and sharing their views with others.

War in Europe WOW Day! - November 2017

To begin our new topic, 'War in Europe' we created 3D models of the amazing Spitfire single-seat fighter planes that were used in WW2.

We also watched the first episode of Anne Frank and are beginning to understand some of the obstacles and problems that Jewish people found themselves facing during WW2.

November 2017 - Year 6 visit the Harry Potter Studio Tour

Staff and pupils had a brilliant day visiting the Harry Potter Studio Tour on Tuesday 7th November to celebrate the end of our Harry Potter topic. We enjoyed walking into the Great Hall, exploring the living room of Number 4 Privet Drive and waiting on the Platform of 9 and 3/4.

The children also had the opportunity to explore how the films were made and enjoyed using green screens to capture special effects!

Computing: Sways - September 2017

As part of Online Safety week the children in Year 6 created Sways using Office 365! We had great fun using this new program and sending them to each other in our email thread. To review our learning we watched the Sways and commented on them.

Lumos Maxima WOW Day! - September 2017

Our first WOW Day was a complete success! We all came to school dressed as various characters from Harry Potter. We watched the 'sorting hat' clip and were then sorted into Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin.

We spent the morning making Hogwarts house decorations, creating floating candles and preparing a buffet.

In the afternoon, everyone made a tie in their house colours. We transformed the hall into The Great Hall by covering it with all of our amazing decorations and then enjoyed a delicious feast!

Reading Buddies - September 2017

We have met our Foundation Stage buddy and looking forward to visiting them every week.  So far we have been chatting to them to find out about their likes and interests and shared books with them.  We also walked them to Church for their first Church service.
