Towcester Church of England Primary School

We will send the children out, as Noah did the dove (Genesis 8:8-12), having nurtured and prepared them for life. Knowing that they are valued and can fly and can take the values of the school out into the world.

Mile a Day Challenge

We have implemented a new whole-school initiative called Towcester CE Primary School’s Mile a Day Challenge, whereby each teacher takes their class outside at any point during the school day to walk, jog or run around the ¼ mile track. It is a safe, simple and measurable health and physical activity initiative accessible to all pupils, regardless of age or ability.

Foundation Stage and Key Stage One children go around the track once.

Lower Key Stage Two (year 3 and 4) children go around the track twice.

Upper Key Stage Two children go around the track four times.

At the end of every half-term, we hold a raffle, whereby all of the children  who have completed their Mile a Day Challenge card stand a chance of winning an exciting sports prize!

At the end of every term, each teacher nominates one child from their class that has shown the School Games Values throughout their Mile a Day sessions. This child is presented with a 'Mile a Day Champion' t-shirt in our celebration assembly.

The initiative has been in place since June 2015 and already, we have seen extremely pleasing results, whereby the running coach has commented on the increased fitness levels of the children in her group. As well as having a positive impact on the general health and fitness of our children, teachers have also noticed enhanced concentration levels in the classroom.

Parents have shown an overwhelming amount of support for this project and have commented on the improved willingness to take part in physical activity outside of school of many of their children.
